The only Type 82 destroyer to be built for the Royal Navy, HMS Bristol (D23) was designed for a role that never materialised, the rest of her class being cancelled when the intended CVA 01 class of aircraft carriers that she was intended to escort and defend were themselves cancelled in the late 1960s. Bristol enjoyed a long and varied career however, her size making her a suitable flagship
